Wine. Where to start?Great Wine

I know when I started in the industry it all seemed a bit intimidating. So much to learn, so many wines, styles, grapes. However, 7 years down the line and I’m still in it and I love it. I think it’s really important for people to know how easy it is to get into wine.

Here are a few points that I think everyone should know about getting into wine -but just remember it’s all about trying new things and having fun!

Wine is very personal. One person's love is another person's loath! Being in the wine industry teaches you to appreciate well made wines whatever the style but we all still have our personal tastes. One of the best examples is the great Bordeaux , Red Burgundy debate. Which side do you fall on? Do you love or hate Pinot Noir? Do you love oaky rich Chardonnay or will only a crisp Sauvignon do?

Don‘t be intimidated by wine merchants. There is wine snobbery out there, but there are also lots of enthusiastic, knowledgeable, people who want to share what they have learned. Wine is a fantastic subject, one that changes and evolves with every vintage. There is always something new to try, a new producer to be interested in, a new area making something different. You will never get bored.

You don‘t have to break the bank. Yes, you can spend an infinite amount on wine, but you can also find gems with more sensible price tags. Again, go into a merchants and ask for some advice. There is nothing like treating yourself to that special bottle but when it comes to everyday drinking there is fantastic value to be found from countries like Chile, Argentina, New Zealand.

You can only age expensive wine. Not true! Yes, a lot of wine is now made to be drunk when it hits the shelves. However there are some fantastic wines within the £10 - £20 range that would age beautifully over a few years. One of the most exciting things is buying a few bottles of the same wine and then trying them over a period of time to see them change and evolve. Although, it does involve being patient!

Wine is linked to some of the best things in life. You can travel to some of the most beautiful places in the world to visit winery‘s. The people you’ll meet will be some of the friendliest enthusiastic people there are, and who’s passion for their work is totally infectious! Also where you find great wine you are never far away from great food.

And finally the most important thing for you to know - Once you catch the wine bug, you’ve got it for life!

About Kelly-Anne:-

After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a Business Management degree, I chose to take up a trainee position with a wine merchant. I loved the idea of being involved with such an interesting and exciting product. I have been working for the same company now for six years and have been a manager with them for three.

During my time in the wine trade I have been lucky enough to visit some amazing places and meet some fantastic people. I really believe that wine should be fun and enjoyed, and I hope to be able to share some of my passion for this great subject with you.
