In one of the side streets you fall upon a fresh clotted cream slice of a building; peep in the window and you're in for another surprise – for there’s Philip Leach, a Masterchef of Great Britain busily creating a multitude of dishes for his restaurant that he opened in 2007. Philp and Helen's dream of their own restaurant started when they met at The Horn of Plenty, Tavistock, Devon in 1997 where they were both working with Master Chef Peter Gorton. During that time the food was awarded 3 AA rosettes and a Michelin Star. Previously Philip had worked with Master Chef Karl Loderer at Manley's in Sussex. Whilst Helen started her career at The Walnut Tree with Franco Taruschio. She was also fortunate to work with Joyce Molyneux at The Carved Angel in Dartmouth and with Jean Christophe Novelli in London. Philip went as head chef to Combe House, Gittisham, Honiton in 1999 and was nominated to be a Master Chef of GB in 2000. In 2004 while at Combe House it was voted the best country house hotel by the Sunday Times travel magazine. At Combe House he also achieved Best Restaurant and most distinctive local menu in Devon Life Magazine 2005. In 2006, Combe House was voted Best Restaurant in the West Country by Taste of the West Food Awards. Open the door to Slice to be warmly greeted by the effervescent Helen Farmer – you couldn’t wish for a friendlier sunny Welsh welcome! Up the stairs is the spacious dining room seating up to eighteen guests – it’s always busy so booking is a must. The room is white, light and airy with a lovely ambience. The menu is a choice of five dishes per course, featuring all local produce and there wasn’t a dish that didn’t appeal, including favourites such as; Pan Fried Fish Cake with Parsley and Lemon Mayonnaise, Roast Pork Belly, Caramelised Apples, Creamed Potato, Cider Sauce and Sticky Toffee Pudding, Butterscotch Sauce, Vanilla Ice-cream. At a very reasonable £15.00 for two courses and £20.00 for three, the bill is as appealing as the menu! The food was everything we expected of a 2009 Regional Welsh Restaurant Winner – and more. Philip has a gift of creating simple dishes that are outstanding in taste and flavour whilst Helen more than does justice in the provision of professional yet friendly service together with a small well chosen wine list. In a nutshell if you’re visiting Swansea or the Gower then Slice has to be on your wish list for lunch or dinner. (Wednesday – Sunday).
