Penderyn

The best little distillery in Wales!

What better way to spend an afternoon, than with a tour at Penderyn distillery, followed by the chance to taste what they have to offer? From the second you walk in the door, you really get a sense of the pride and dedication involved in everything that is produced there. We were very lucky to be shown around by Sian Whitelock, whose excitement for the product was infectious.

Whisky is a really interesting tipple, with so many different types to choose from. With styles that range from very soft and honeyed to fiery and peaty. Penderyn is no exception, with, three main styles to choose from. All of their whiskies are matured in old Bourbon Casks, from award winning bourbon producers such as Buffalo Trace. The difference between them comes from how they are finished, be it in Madeira casks, sherry casks, or old peaty whiskey casks.

The Penderyn Single Malt. Premium strength 46% vol.

This whisky spends the last portion of it’s life in old Madeira casks. A lovely soft whiskey, with flavours of caramel, dried fruit and vanilla. Smell the fantastic aroma of a well made, spirit filled fruit cake! With a great length, this is a great example to get you started into Penderyn whiskies.

The Penderyn Single Malt Sherry wood. Premium strength 46% vol .

This Whisky is finished by spending time in old Oloroso sherry casks. This gives theWhisky a lovely creamy, nutty flavour, backed up by dark dried fruits. If you like the softer styles and are interested in something different, then why not give this great product a try.

The Penderyn Single Malt Peated. Premium strength 46% vol.

The important thing with this whisky is that it isn’t a very heavily peated style. If you are looking for a smoky style that reminds you of a long died out coal fire, with vanilla and interesting citrus notes then I highly recommend this one.

However, Penderyn is not only about Whisky. With a Gin, vodka and cream liqueur to try, there is something for everyone.

Brecon Five Vodka 40% vol.

Brecon Vodka is distilled five times, giving it real purity. This makes for a soft, clean crisp vodka. Brecon Five Vodka would prove a fantastic partner to good quality mixers or why not get creative and use it for the basis of a Cosmopolitan.

Brecon Gin. 40% vol.

10 different botanicals go into the production of this delicious gin, with the recipe being over 100 years old. First you get the wonderful hit of Juniper berries, but this is backed up with a lovely spicy finish. Perfect with tonic and a wedge of lime. Or why not impress your friends with a Gin Martini.

Merlyn. 17% vol.

This is an indulgent cream liqueur. Be warned this is very, very moreish. Rich and creamy, but with a clean crisp kick on the finish which leaves you palate fresh and looking forward to the next sip! Just serve this on it’s own, or over ice.

This really was a great experience and I highly recommend a visit. Seeing how these spirits are produced is very interesting and with the chance of some tasting at the end it‘s a perfect opportunity to learn about some great Welsh produce. There really is something for everyone at Penderyn, whether you already know your stuff or its all new to you, you’ll enjoy yourself. Also when you fall in love with their spirits you can always stop at the shop on the way out, so you can take your tasting home to your friends.
