The George Hotel, EdinburghPrincipal Hayley’s ‘The George’ in Edinburgh is ideally located for any demanding tourist being just a short stroll from all the modern attractions the city has to offer and also within reasonable walking distance of The Old Town. This Grade II listed building is full of modern amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The staff are incredibly welcoming as you enter the reception area and your bags are whisked away to your room. Comfortable seats and armchairs relax you straight away as you gaze out of the windows of this magnificent Georgian building.

The room we stayed in was no less impressive, a vast bed and furnishings that were totally in keeping with the hotel’s historic surroundings, the only real hint of modernity being the LCD TV and immaculate bathroom. We looked out onto George Street itself with The Hard Rock Cafe directly opposite and despite the normal hustle and bustle of a busy City it was relatively quiet. The bathroom was luxuriously modern with Porcelanosa tiles and Space NK fittings and well appointed with a bath and shower, just what you need after a hard day’s shopping and sight-seeing.

The Tempus Bar and Restaurant are situated just off the Lobby and proved to be a stylishTempus Bar, The George place to go for your pre-dinner cocktails or a glass of bubbly. Just lively enough to get you in the mood for an evening out on the town. Again, friendly service from knowledgeable bar staff who actually know how to mix a cocktail. Dinner is served in the restaurant and is an informal affair set in very chic surroundings. Fresh produce and a constantly changing menu means you could start with saffron and smoked garlic risotto with Pan fried sea bass or perhaps wild boar to follow. As a Tempus finale they could tempt you with the signature chocolate and orange tart – delicious! Breakfast is also served in Tempus and is buffet style with a choice of full Scottish breakfast or kippers or a continental selection with fresh tea and coffee. This was thoroughly enjoyable as we could dictate how much or how little we had to eat.

Sadly, our time at The George was drawing to an end and the staff at reception allowed us an extra couple of hours before checkout as our flight wasn’t leaving till later that evening - very decent of them. You couldn’t ask for a better location to explore Edinburgh’s many attractions than The George and whilst tearing yourself away from its four walls maybe hard, you know that you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome on your return.
